Donald graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1994. After working in practice in Edinburgh and the Dental Hospitals in Bristol, Edinburgh and Glasgow he trained in Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology in Glasgow and Dundee. He has been a Consultant in Dundee Dental Hospital since 2006 where his main interests are the investigation of salivary disease and cone beam CT. 

Donald also has considerable experience teaching and examining undergraduate students and postgraduate dentists in the UK and abroad. He is a member of the British Society for Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology and the International Association of Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology and a member of the central council of the European Academy of Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology.
